To clean a glass top stove, I'd follow four habits the makers agree on. Wipe it once it's cool and polish it with cooktop cream. Lift burnt-on food with a razor scraper held low, and get sugar off before it sets. Held low means different things by maker, from 20 to 30 degrees in Bosch Canada's guides to about 45 at Whirlpool.
A glass top stove is an electric range or cooktop whose elements, radiant electric or induction, sit under one smooth sheet of glass-ceramic. I read the cleaning pages and manuals from Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, LG, Samsung and Bosch. They split on the scraper angle and on how warm the glass can be when you scrape, so each line below names its maker.
Merit Home Furniture lists glass top ranges and cooktops for Island kitchens through our Campbell River and Port Alberni stores. I work in Duncan, and that store has stopped carrying appliances.
How do you clean a glass top stove?
Cleaning a glass top stove starts with the controls off and the glass cool. Samsung asks for a wipe after each use or straight after a spill, since a fresh spill comes off more easily.
- Let it cool. Frigidaire warns that cleaner on hot glass gives off fumes that can harm your health and damage the surface.
- Wipe off crumbs. Use a clean, damp cloth, because Frigidaire says a dirty one leaves lint or soil that burns on.
- Polish with cream. Whirlpool and LG both say a few drops about the size of a dime.
- Scrape what's left. A razor scraper made for glass cooktops, at your maker's angle from the table below.
- Buff it dry. A dry cloth or paper towel takes off the last film.
How do I make my glass top stove look new again?
A dull top usually wants cream and a buff rather than harder scrubbing. Frigidaire's Canadian manual says its cream leaves a protective finish that helps prevent scratches. None of the pages I read offers a way to take existing scratches out.
Glass top stove cleaners the makers name
Each maker points to a cream made for glass-ceramic.
- Whirlpool and KitchenAid: affresh cooktop cleaner with the blue scrubbing pad, left to dry to a white haze, then polished.
- Frigidaire: CERAMA BRYTE Cleaning Creme in its manual, and ReadyClean, which Frigidaire Canada says suits any brand's ceramic, glass or induction top.
- Bosch: Induction Cooktop Cleaner, part 12010030, and the glass scraper, part 17000334.
- LG and Samsung: a cleaner approved or designed for glass cooktops, no brand named.
Baking soda and vinegar on a glass top stove
Samsung Canada is the one maker of the six with a baking soda and vinegar method, and it aims it at mineral deposits. For a Samsung black glass top, that page is the maker's own answer. Spray the mix on, cover it with a towel wrung out of soapy water, and wait 15 minutes. Then wipe the glass dry.
Cloudy haze after cleaning a glass stove top
A white haze is what affresh leaves as it dries, and Whirlpool's method ends with a dry polish to take it off. Hard water spots are the mineral deposits Samsung's method targets.
How to clean glass top stove burnt on food with a razor scraper
All six makers allow a razor scraper for burnt-on food, and the angle is where they part ways.
| Maker | Scraper angle and timing |
|---|---|
| Whirlpool, KitchenAid | About 45 degrees, glass warm but not hot, oven mitt on |
| Frigidaire | A 30 degree angle, per its Canadian cooktop manual |
| LG | About 30 degrees, glass still hot, oven mitt or pot holder |
| Bosch | 20 to 30 degrees on a cooled top; its Canadian tips page says about 20 degrees for burnt sugar while warm |
| Samsung | No angle given; a fresh blade every time |
Bosch's scraper listing calls 45 or 90 degrees too steep for its glass, so the Whirlpool figure doesn't carry over to a Bosch. Samsung says a fresh blade prevents scratches, and I'd change blades often.
Burnt sugar, melted plastic and a scorched cloth on glass
Sugar is the exception to the cool-glass rule. Frigidaire says high-sugar spills and melted plastic can pit the glass for good unless they're removed immediately. KitchenAid says sugar left to cool can stick and leave permanent marks. Frigidaire and LG scrape it off hot, KitchenAid once the top cools slightly. The oven mitt matters more than speed.
How do you get a burnt microfibre cloth off a glass stovetop?
Microfibre is synthetic, so a melted cloth is melted plastic in the manuals' terms. LG and Frigidaire say it comes off right away with a scraper while the glass is hot, mitt on.
How to clean a glass stove top without damaging it: what the makers rule out
- Steel wool, scouring pads and abrasive powders. Frigidaire adds metal pads and some nylon ones.
- Oven cleaner, chlorine bleach and ammonia, which Frigidaire says can etch or discolour the glass.
- Window cleaner, because Bosch says its ammonia can damage the cooktop and give off toxic fumes when heated.
- Aluminum foil, which Frigidaire rules out under any circumstances.
Samsung's page uses the words "glass cleaner" for products made for glass cooktops, so I'd check any bottle's label for ammonia first.
Can a magic eraser go on a glass stovetop?
None of the six makers' pages mentions a melamine sponge, for or against. The makers that name a pad ask for a non-abrasive one, so I'd ask the stove's maker before trying one.
Induction glass and radiant glass: what changes when you clean them
Induction and radiant tops take the same creams and scrapers. The difference is heat in the glass. BC Hydro's piece on induction says only the pan heats up, so spills don't get the chance to burn or stick.
Radiant glass
The element heats the glass itself, so a spill can bake on mid-meal.
Induction glass
The glass warms only under the hot pan, though Samsung still warns about residual heat.
Coatings change the rules. Our listing for the Whirlpool 30 in. Smart Induction Cooktop notes WipeClean-coated glass. KitchenAid's WipeClean page says scrapers may damage that coating. Its method is water over the residue for at least 5 minutes, then a non-abrasive sponge.
Keeping a KitchenAid stovetop clean
KitchenAid's help page says to scrape its ceramic glass at about 45 degrees while the glass is warm but not hot. Then comes affresh on the blue pad, dried to a haze and polished. The KitchenAid 30 in. Induction Downdraft Cooktop has a vent in the centre of its glass, so its manual is worth reading for the vent too.
Cookware that scratches a glass top stove
Frigidaire's Canadian manual says cast iron, metal, ceramic or glass cookware with rough bottoms can mark or scratch the surface, so pans get lifted, never slid. Aluminum or copper bottoms slid across it leave metal marks, and Frigidaire says to remove them with cream once the glass cools, before they set for good. A pan boiled dry can break or mark the glass, damage it says is not covered by its warranty. It also says the cooktop isn't a cutting board or a work surface.

Cracks in a glass top stove: when to stop using it
A cracked glass top stove is past cleaning. Frigidaire's Canadian manual says not to clean or use a broken cooktop, since spills and cleaning solutions can get through the break and create a risk of electric shock. It says to contact a qualified technician immediately. A stove burner that won't heat is a different fault. For safety, switch it off at the breaker until a technician has seen it. Pitting from set sugar and marks from a boiled-dry pan are permanent, and no manual I read offers a fix.
Also worth a minute: Health Canada's 2019 recall of some Whirlpool, KitchenAid and JennAir radiant glass cooktops whose elements could switch on by themselves. About 2,838 were sold in Canada between March 2017 and August 2019. Health Canada's notice tells owners to contact Whirlpool for a free replacement and to keep the unit off at the breaker unless it's needed meanwhile.
